The Detention and Bodily Harm Meted out to Suldan Abdirahman Bade Must be Condemned
It is sad news to hear that Suldan Abdirahman Bade was taken away from his home, unjustly detained and physically harmed. If this shows anything, it shows the anarchic situation and arrogant behavior that exists in Jigjiga, the capital city of Somali Region of Ethiopia.Suldan Abdirhaman Bade is the Suldan of Abasguul sub clan of Jidwaq clan; he is highly regarded in Jidwaq clan’s circles. He used to be Deputy Speaker of Somali Region of Ethiopia’s parliament some time ago, but has now retreated from politics to focus on his traditional role. His father Suldan Bade Abdi was among Jigjiga city’s custodians, and Suldan Abdirahman’s brother, Abdullahi Bade--a graduate of then Haile Selassie University, became the governor of then Hararge province, which included the Somali region. Unfortunately, Abdullahi Bade was eventually shot dead aboard an airplane by Mingistu Haile Mairam in 1978. Suldan Abdirahman is from this family.
The incident which led to the Suldan’s detention and harassment was sparked by rough words exchanged by the Suldan and a uniformed officer from the region’s Liyu Police. The dispute quickly turned into a fierce scuffle and the two men bunched each other. Suldan Abdurrahman knocked down the police man and left him with bruises.
The Suldan then returned to his home. A little later, two high ranking officers from the Liyu Police came to the Suldan’s home and requested him to go with them. One of the officers is the commander of the region’s armed forces; he hails from the Suldan’s clan. So, the Suldan did not see any eminent threat since he knew both men. He had thought that he was in safe hands, but the worst had to happen to him.
The officers had tricked the Suldan and taken him to a Liyu Police station, where an angry mob was awaiting him. Suldan Abdirahman Bade was bombarded with beatings and hitting the instant he arrived there. Of course, he could not withstand such a huge number of unprincipled Liyu Police men.
The powerless commander who led the Suldan to that situation was helplessly standing there, watching the suffering of his Suldan, but unable to utter a word or extend a hand. What a shame! With bruises from thugs, the forsaken Suldan was taken back to his home.
Worse, false and fabricated news story has added insult to injury. A poorly written website, peppered with uppercase letters all over the place, reported that the Suldan hurt a civilian person in a public place. What a lie! Cakaara News is a nonsense website with biased, incompetent reporters. Look closely at what they write and report. They bore you with guulwadenimo, biased, unbalanced and rumpling news stories.
He was not a civilian person; he was sworn, uniformed policemen. But such a person and his ilk should not be part of the region’s Liyu Police force. They should not be hurting civilians, but should direct their might at proper avenues.
This incident conjures up a Somali saying: Dibiga gawrac wayshu haku quus qaadatee, which means “Slaughter a male calf so that a female calf should despair”.
This is an outrageous incident with negative effects. If traditional, respected chiefs are not spared of the Liyu Police’s brutality, what will happen to ordinary people in the region? Sadly, the Liyu Police are let loose and told to hit and hurt whoever they desire. Whose forces are they anyway? Often times, Abdi Iley, the region’s president, brags about the Liyu Police and trivializes whatever horrendous crimes they perpetrate.
These immoral militiamen kill innocent people at will and accuse them of being anti peace members. Unfortunately, people who are known to be against anti-peace groups are falsely accused and killed indiscriminately.
Those unscrupulous police men who plotted against the Suldan in the first place and led him to a mob of thugs so that he could be hurt physically should be condemned and persecuted; and everything must be done to punish the perpetrators.
